my Dad, Romulo C. Malacas

It’s been almost two months since my Dad lost his battle to lung cancer.  I couldn’t post a blog after his passing.  I really didn’t know what to write about, nor had the energy for it.  It’s tough to write about someone you love about their passing, because it brings back all the great memories you’ve had.  But now, I think it’s time to for me to write again.  And to start off, I’ll post the speech I did for my Dad.  Here it goes:

Why?  Why did God have to take my Dad?  If everything has a reason, then why did He give my Dad lung cancer?  These are some of the questions that kept lingering on my mind.  You get these mixed emotions, negative feelings, loss of faith.  So I asked my wife the same questions.  Then I finally realized, because my wife told me, that Dad already served his purpose in life.  Then friends told me that he lived a good life… and he did.  So thank you all for making me understand.

But the pain and this feeling of emptiness seem unbearable.  It’s difficult to adjust our lives without my Dad.  He was a great Dad, a great husband, great Popop for Avery and a great friend for many people.

If there is a fight better than any boxing match it was my Dad’s fight with lung cancer.  It wasn’t just 12 rounds of right hooks and uppercuts but a year and two months of radiation and chemo.  His fight was longer than any of his doctors have predicted him to live, coz my Dad was always a fighter.

My fondest memory with my Dad is singing karaoke with him.  Whenever there was a party, Dad would always grab the karaoke mic first rather than the spoon and fork.  He would always learn to play in the keyboard the songs he would sing.  He was also great in sports.  I could never forget his unbelievable shots in pool and his wild hook shots in basketbal.

With all the people gathered here today, I am amazed at how a man with few words can touch so many lives.  Though my father will not be physically here anymore, he will always be alive in our memories and in our hearts.

And as my father gave his name to me, I will carry on with all the gifts he left us; how a husband he was to my mom, how a dad should be to his children, the glory is sacrificing and putting others first, the passion for music and outdoors, and to never give up all the battles you are faced with.  If I could be half the man, the father, the husband, the friend my father was, then he did not die in vain.

Sleep warm Dad, sleep tight, sleep well.  I love you.  We love you.  Always have and always will.

Popoy Malacas

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted about my boy Popoy. He is huge now. He is going to be ten months old on December 4th. Time really flies! He is just too much… He’s so adorable, sweet and very annoying sometimes! lol We’re trying to get a treadmill so I can teach him how to run on it. It’s getting cold outside and it’s hard to take him out for a walk and some exercise. Here’s how he looks now…

HAPPY BDAY TO MY DAD!

October 10, 2008 was my Dad’s bday. He was surprised we had a little thing for him. Alou and I ordered a cake from Yia Yia Bakery shaped like a microphone, since he likes doing karaoke. When he came out of the house and came to the garage, everybody was there and we all started singing Happy Birthday. He smiled and when he blew his candle, he said “more, more, more”. I almost cried when he said that…

Anyway, we had fun, we prayed, and ate a bunch of food. Mr. Alex was the one who bought the food for my Dad. (He was my Dad’s former boss, and now his bestfriend!) To Mr. Alex, we thank you so much!

Pictures will be up later.

As promised, here are some pics:

Update on my Dad

Wow, it’s been awhile since I’ve written a blog!

Well anyway, my Dad is okay although, he feels dizzy and weak at times.  He feels sad and lonely and bored sometimes so whenever he can, he goes outside in the garden.  A couple of weeks ago he was feeling fine and we actually played billiards.  Of course, he beat me and I only won one game out of five (my Dad is awesome in pool!).

Anyway, his birithday is coming up (Oct. 10th, 2moro!) and we were supposed to have a surprise party for him on sunday.  He found out about it and now he wants us not to do anything for his birthday.  We’ll have a lunch thing on friday and we still don’t know if we’ll have one on sunday but if we do, it’s just going to be a family thing.

Canada pics

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted here. Been busy lately. A week after Canada, my wife and my in-laws had to go to Texas to visit my wife’s brother. My wife’s staying there right now for 2 1/2 weeks and my in-laws are going to stay there for about a month or so. It’s been tough for me and Popoy to be left behind for almost three weeks, although I didn’t have to worry about cooking because my wife cooked a bunch of flip foods and put them on a freezer. (Isn’t she great!? She thinks about me all the time!)

Anyway, with Popoy having company for two months while me and my wife worked, it’s a big change for him. He is alone most of the time since they left, and I work in the morning and play tennis most afternoons. There is a big yard in the back of the house so whenever I get home, I take him out there so we can play and exercise together.

But now, I’m excited because my wife is coming back in 3 days! We’re pretty much inseparable so the time apart is both killing us. Ok ok, enough with the mushy stuff.. hehe

Here are some of the Canada pics…

latest update about Dad

Well, coming back from Canada was also as long as getting there. We were supposed to go take a different route, a shorter route, but somehow the gps gave us the same directions going back. Instead of passing the Niagara Falls, we passed Syracuse instead. Anyway, when we got home, my Dad got sick. He got a flu, and his temp was higher than normal. But ever since we got back, seems like he’s ok by morning and by late afternoon, he gets sick. We were going to take him to the ER sunday night but he didn’t want to. His temp did get better later on so we just decided to call the doctor early morning to see what his advise about the situation.

Canada

We went to Canada last week and visited some family friends and relatives. Believe me, 13 hours of driving was not fun especially if your passengers in the back are taking their naps. But if I didn’t drive, I’d probably do the same thing. hehe

We stayed one day at Toronto and one day at Hamilton then we stayed four days by Niagara Falls. Niagara was beautiful, and the famous falls was gorgeous. We did a bus tour, all the tourist spots at Niagara but the very best thing about the tour was, the Maid of the Mist. That experience was awesome and made our vacation worth it.

So to the people who are thinking of visiting Niagara Falls, the Canadian side is better and I recommend you all to try and ride the Maid of the Mist. It looked pretty scary but it wasn’t really. It was a fun ride… Satisfaction guaranteed! =)

Popoy is 4 months old!

Popoy turned 4 months five days ago. We took him to the vet and he now have his rabies shot. He is now 33.3 lbs, longer, heavier, and even crazier! hehe

Our baby is now getting older and have been potty-trained for a long while now. Whenever he wants to go pee or poo, he usually barks in front of the back door. We’re so proud!

Oh yeah, the vet told us that he’ll probably going to be 50 lbs next month! And yeah, he’s still a puppy so he snags our shoes once in a while, loves to bite my slippers on our way up to the stairs, loves to bite our hairs, and pretty much just jump on us whenever he wants to. He’s so adorable! Here’s his latest pics…

Luray Caverns, VA

Last week, we went to Virginia and visited Luray Cavern. Luray Cavern is actually a natural wonder which was discovered hundreds of years ago. It is a large cavern with many formations.
I really don’t want to write the history but if you want to learn more about Luray Cavern, click here. I just want to show you some pics so I can encourage you to visit the cavern. It’s pretty amazing!

St. Michaels, MD

I’ve never even heard of St. Michaels until about 2 weeks ago. My wife wanted us to bring her parents to St. Michaels coz she heard that it’s really nice out there. It’s more like Inner Harbor, well, better. We really didn’t have enough time to explore the whole place and besides, we really didn’t even know where to go. But we did go to the Crab and Steak House for lunch. We also brought Popoy with us and it was difficult for he got tired pretty fast because of the hot weather. After lunch, we walked by the port and walked through the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Check out some pics:

Then on our way back to the parking lot, we met Bailey. She’s almost 2 yrs old golden retriever. She is gorgeous with beautiful hairs. She and Popoy played around a lil bit. We just imagined that Popoy is going to be her size in about 2 yrs or so…

After St Michaels, we got stuck in traffic and passed by the Prime outlet. Oh yeah, we had to pass the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and boy it was a bit scary! It was long, and high and did I say long already? he he Anyway, it was a fun day…
